Debunking Common Assumptions About Downsizing

Ever wondered about downsizing and condo living? Let's chat about common assumptions and why they shouldn't hold you back from your next exciting life phase!

Assumption One: Storage/Space - Where am I going to put all my stuff?

Many people worry about storage space when contemplating downsizing. Picture yourself in a condo and wonder, do you really need all that stuff? Consider if you use it, need it, or have a sentimental attachment. It's surprising how much quality stuff, like solid oak dining sets or sterling silver, our kids may not want. Take a cue from the minimalist generations and decide what stays and what you can part with.

Assumption: It will be too much work. Who's going to help me move?

Feeling overwhelmed about the physical effort of moving? Don't fret! There are now estate clearing/moving teams ready to sell or find new homes for your items. They handle the heavy lifting, and you can be as involved as you want. No need to burden your family; let the experts take care of it.

Assumption: For partners - Will I still have my own space?

Concerned about personal space in a smaller home? Look for condos with common areas like party rooms, workshops, or exercise rooms. Parks, trails, and nearby coffee shops also offer retreats when you need a bit of personal space.

Assumption: If I downsize, I won’t have anything to keep me busy.

Worried about boredom in a smaller space? Embrace the positive: downsizing gives you time for new hobbies like baking, puzzles, painting, or photography. Some condo communities welcome extra help with various activities, so you can stay engaged and contribute.

Assumption: Leaving my family home will be too HARD emotionally.

It's tough to leave a family home filled with memories. Acknowledge the emotional challenge and give yourself time. Share your feelings with friends and family and take the downsizing process at your own pace.

Assumption: I won't be allowed to bring my pet.

Good news! Most condos are pet-friendly, especially for smaller pets. While there might be restrictions on the number and size of pets, many condos welcome your furry friends.

Ginny’s Top Three Tips for Downsizing:

As someone who has just recently downsized herself, and has had a successful career in real estate helping Niagara families downsize for the past 37 years, I find myself repeating these three main things to those who want downsizing advice:

1. Downsize, and then downsize again. Letting go might be tough initially, but it feels like a fresh start or a clean slate.

2. Location matters. Choose a home close to shopping, family, and amenities that align with your lifestyle and independence.

3. Make the move now while you still can. Waiting too long might leave the decision in someone else's hands when you're not as fit to move.
